It is also a land of conflict and creativity. The literature of the continent draws upon a fascinating body of oral traditions and lore and also reflects the political turmoil of the modern world. With the increased interest in cultural diversity and the growing centrality of Africa in world politics, African literature is figuring more and more prominently in the curriculum.

This book helps students learn about the African literary achievement. Written expressly for students, this book is far more accessible than other reference works on the subject. Included are nearly alphabetically arranged entries on authors, such as Chinua Achebe, Athol Fugard, Buchi Emecheta, Nadine Gordimer, and Wole Soyinka; major works, such as Things Fall Apart and Petals of Blood; and individual genres, such as the novel, drama, and poetry. Many entries cite works for further reading, and the volume closes with a selected, general bibliography.

Reply 13 on: March 5, , Bailey, Ph. This has over two hundred cross-referenced entries, four essays, and discussions applying chemistry science to daily life. Reply 14 on: March 5, , The contributors come from a variety of disciplines in the life sciences, and most are affiliated with academic institutions.

There are signed main entries, ranging in length from to words each; articles are updates from the previous edition, while are new entries. The entries cover a wide variety of topics related to animal life and include articles on subjects such as biodiversity and defense mechanisms as well as those on specific species or individual animals. Each entry begins with ready-reference information and a list of principal terms with definitions.

Species entries include a sidebar listing basic facts such as classification, geographical location, habitat, life span, and the anatomical features that make the species unique. The arrangement is strictly alphabetical, which means that specific animals or animal groups are intermingled with general topics, issues, and concepts; "cloning" is followed by "cockroaches," for instance, and "elk" by "embryology. The illustrations consist of black-and-white photographs and are neither as numerous nor as exciting as those in Facts on File's three-volume The Encyclopedia of Mammals or DK's one-volume Animal, either of which is a better choice for libraries needing an animal encyclopedia only.

The strength of the Magill's set is its comprehensive coverage of animal life science generally, not just individual animals. A worthwhile purchase for libraries needing this type of reference. Reply 15 on: March 5, , The history of science is the story of great discoveries, flashes of intuition that changed the way people saw the world, hard work, and arduous calculation in the laboratory. But who are the most important men and women whose notions and theories have changed the world?

From Galileo to Thales, from the ancient world to the present day, it is sometimes those with the simplest ideas who have had the greatest impact. As the study of the physical world becomes more and more specialized, it is sometimes refreshing to uncover a proof that tips accepted wisdom on its head. Reply 16 on: March 5, , The Encyclopedia presents over four hundred articles in three volumes. The Encyclopedia of Western Colonialism since is not only a comprehensive reference work that embraces world history during the past five centuries, it is as well an international intellectual project.

One can easily understand that the history and very nature of Western colonialism has been a subject of great controversy and conflicting moral claims. It remains a fascinating subject open to interpretation and vigorous debate. Reply 17 on: March 5, , The signed articles in the set, edited by Schement communication and information policy, Pennsylvania State Univ. Entries cover eight general topics: careers in the communication and information fields, information science, information technologies, literacy, institutional studies, interpersonal communication, library science, and media effects.

Students will find that the articles provide a good overview of each topic and that most have a bibliography. Many favorite student topics, such as subliminal advertising, media effects on body image, and minorities in the media, are included. The biographical entries range from famous figures like newspaper publisher Joseph Pulitzer to lesser-known individuals, such as the noted African American librarian and storyteller Augusta Braxton Baker. A detailed index and See Also references add to the encyclopedia's value.

Reply 18 on: March 5, , Name: New Encyclopedia of Africa, 5 Vol. The set addresses the entire history of African cultures from the pharaohs and the ancient civilizations of the south through the colonial era to the emergence of 53 independent countries, some of them, like Nigeria, newly emergent in world commerce and others deep in conflict Sudan, Liberia, Congo.

Gary Wills, "What the Qur'an Meant: And Why It Matters"

Features hundreds of photographs, including five color essays, plus maps, thematic outline, chronology, and appendix of ethnic and identity groups. Reply 19 on: March 5, , Author: Harlow G. Legal issues, teaching methods, types of schools, educational organizations and programs, tests, publications, administration, and leading educators are some of the broad areas covered.

Articles range from a few sentences voucher system, classical realism, phoneme to several pages school choice, prayer-in-school, student unrest , with most falling somewhere in between Channel One, Coleman Report, multicultural education. Entries for each state briefly survey the history of education there. Entries give concise definitions and descriptions, which will be sufficient for most users.

The treatment is often historical, however; entries do not always delve into current issues. For instance, the incorporation of trade books into the elementary curriculum is not mentioned in children's literature; the controversy over alternatives to vivisection is not found under biology. There is no entry for the Internet, a topic that certainly has many implications for education, and it is not mentioned in computers.

Curiously, saving space is provided as the reason library catalogs and other holdings were converted to computer files in recent years. Reply 20 on: March 5, , Cross-referenced segments on cultural areas, i. Sections on prehistory, Mayas, Aztecs, and Olmecs are included. Entries contain a lot of information but are often chatty, rambling discussions that stray from the topic. Recommended for public libraries lacking Leitch. Mary B. Accessible to student, enthusiast and scholar alike, the book aims to provide the reader with argument-settling expertise and answers to questions such as: who first used air power against civilians? Also included are full discussions of aviation lore, descriptions of famous aerial exploits, combats aces, airplane makers, and other visionaries. Reply 22 on: March 5, , Understood by Muslims to contain God's own words, it has been an object of reverence and of intense study for centuries.

The thousands of volumes that Muslim scholars have devoted to qur'anic interpretation and to the linguistic, rhetorical and narrative analysis of the text are sufficient to create entire libraries of qur'anic studies. Drawing upon a rich scholarly heritage, Brill's "Encyclopaedia of the Qur'an" EQ combines alphabetically-arranged articles about the contents of the Qur'an. It is an encyclopaedic dictionary of qur'anic terms, concepts, personalities, place names, cultural history and exegesis extended with essays on the most important themes and subjects within qur'anic studies.

With nearly entries in 5 volumes, the "EQ" is the first comprehensive, multi-volume reference work on the Qur'an to appear in a Western language.

Cross-referencing and indices, frequent cross-references will draw readers to related entries and each article will conclude with a citation of relevant bibliography. The final volume of the "EQ" will contain indices of transliterated terms, of qur'anic references and of the authors and exegetes cited in the entries and essays. It will also include a synoptic outline of the full contents of the "EQ". Scholars from many nations have written articles for the encyclopaedia.

Reply 23 on: March 5, , Each entry includes a brief discussion of the author's life and work and includes a full bibliography. Each entry on a particular work also analyzes its literary merits and place within the tradition of fantasy and horror. This essential volume covers hundreds of writers, including many whose work is taught in high school and college, such as C.

Eighteen helpful appendixes provide information on state mental health agencies, rates of substance abuse by high-schoolers, demographics of people who have received treatment for substance abuse, and more.

Numerous tables and graphs help communicate complex statistical data. The inclusion of important organizational contact information directly within the individual entries is a useful feature. For example, at the end of the entry for Credit card overspending, the reader will find the mailing address and URL for Debtor's Anonymous.

Similarly, within the entry Depression may be found the addresses, phone numbers, and URLs for six related organizations, including the National Foundation for Depressive Illness and the National Institute of Mental Health.
